چکیده

The obese patient presenting for surgery is at high risk for developing the pulmonary acid aspiration syndrome due to a large volume of acidic gastric contents. Cimetidine, an H 2 receptor antagonist, reduces gastric secretion and increases gastric pH. In the following study, cimetidine increased gastric pH in the obese patient, but had no effect on gastric volume. By increasing gastric pH, cimetidine decreased the risk of the patient developing PAAS.

Intramuscular cimeti- dine and ranitidine as prophylaxis against gastric aspiration

Preoperative cimetidine 300 mg or ranitidh~e in 50 and 100 mg doses were administered intramuscularly to 120 patients in a randomized double-blind study. The volume and pH of gastric aspirate samples obtained after tracheal intubation and before extabation were measured. The pH of gastric aspirate was higher Jbllowing ranitidine 100 mg than ranitidine 50 mg or cimetidine 300 mg at both intubati...

Single-dose intravenous H2 blocker prophylaxis against aspiration pneumonitis: assessment of drug concentration in gastric aspirate.

This placebo-controlled trial compared the effects of preoperative, intravenous cimetidine (300 mg) or ranitidine (50 mg) on gastric pH and gastric volume in 31 adult patients requiring general anesthesia. The elapsed time from drug administration to initial gastric sampling did not differ significantly between ranitidine (45 minutes), cimetidine (48 minutes), or placebo (52 minutes) treated pa...

The effects of cimetidine and ranitidine with and without metoclopramide on gastric volume and pH in morbidly obese patients.

The efficacy of preanaesthetic intravenous cimetidine versus ranitidine with and without metoclopramide for acid aspiration prophylaxis was assessed in 60 morbidly obese patients in a double-blind manner. Group 1 patients received cimetidine 300 mg + saline. Group 2 patients received cimetidine 300 mg + metoclopramide 10 mg. Group 3 patients received ranitidine 100 mg + saline. Group 4 patients...

Prernedication with cimetidine and metoclopramide

A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel study was conducted in adult females to evaluate the efficacy andsafety of a combination of cimetidine 300 mg orally and metoclopramide 10 or 20 mg intravenously in reducing pre-operative residual gastric volume and raising gastric pH. The effect of preoperative metoclopramide on postoperative nausea and vomiting was also investigated. Ora...

Background and Objective: The gastric residual volume has a direct effect on the volume and timing of the subsequent feeding and causes gastric emptying and pulmonary aspiration. The present study compares the effect of Cydonia oblonga and Phyllanthus Emblica (Amla) fruit on gastric residual volume and pulmonary aspiration in mechanically- ventilated patients. Materials and Methods: This is a...
